Foster report for Moby (the dog formerly known as Aslan) 💙💙💙
This little boy is a delight! He was a cuddlebug in the rescue but he’d been there a year from a fluffy puppy, and with the war in Ukraine we decided to evacuate the longest residents to safety in the UK. He came over at the start of April 2022💙💙💙 he was and is very much a kettle dog (see our website blogs for what this is), but nervy too being a whippet mix; he loves to engage with the resident dogs, and loves to lie and sleep next to a human on the sofa, he loves his bed, his banky, the window seat, armchairs, he’s learnt sit, has had a bath and a groom and is fine with a collar now, has his toilet training and dinner manners pretty much sorted, he is fed by himself only because he prefers solitude at dinner time, he NEVER food defends, and is very patient, waiting till last for treats, and does not touch anyone else’s food- he engages with toys and loves sleeping and playing with the resident dogs as well. He is SUPER loving and just wants to cuddle. Therefore he will need a home with a confident resident dog who knows the house rules to copy. We hope to get him better at recall (he wasn’t recognising his rescue name and it took us a few days to find out what sounds he likes, and he chose Moby) getting used to a harness to prepare for walks but because he is still a little nervous and shy by nature this is a slow patient and steady process. He will almost always come over for a treat though!
Does anybody want to take Moby those final few steps to a wonderful forever home and life? 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
He hasn’t found his voice yet but does sit for treats already most of the time. He’s only small end of medium 15 kg maximum and more like 13kg, he has the cutest fluffy ruff and is a curious mix of ginger, fawn and at his roots it’s much darker in places. He’s also a comedy genius, not at all dignified so don’t be fooled. He’ll show submissive language with new people, you’ll have to go to him first preferably with a sausage.💙💙💙
🆘🆘🆘CAN YOU HELP US FIND HIS FOREVER PEOPLE?🆘🆘🆘 Moby’s vital statistics:
Age: 03/08/2020
Size/weight: small/medium (15kg max) whippet lurcher
Fed on? Raw, really likes bird mixes and pork
Temperament: Happy, bit skittish, typical nervy whippet lad really, comedy genius, bit scatty but obedient when he knows what to do , loves gentle fuss and tummy rubs and is naturally submissive, needs encouragement to do tasks and jobs but is smart, not a greedy boy and more of a snacker, starting to get picky with treats already (!)
Neuter: YES
DP test: done, negative
Full 4DX, giardiasis, leishmaniasis and brucellosis: DONE, NEGATIVE
first vaccines: up to date
flea tick and worm treatment: up to date
Rabies and booster: rabies due Feb 2025
Kids test: 👪none resident sorry but dog savvy kids visit so if they’re dog savvy and relatively quiet he’s likely to love them like his sister (in foster SE ENG) does!
Cats: not available, none resident so we cannot accept applications from people with cats sorry
Humans (male and female)? bit shy of new people but improving, he’s just a shy boy- he doesn’t hide any more but will only engage once he knows you.👨👩
LIFESTYLE, TEMPERAMENT and SKILLSYAYs! (His special skills/ stuff he likes)Other dogs? ✅✅ ✅ YES 🐕 loves all dogs big and small, loves to play and has a lot of patience even with the annoying littles that stick their head in his mouth! He’s generally very friendly with them all so we're looking for a home with at least one resident dog already preferably (but see below)
Likes water (swimming etc)? ✅ ✅ ✅ he’s liked all water he’s seen from puddles to a river and and a lake, doesn’t seem worried by them, likes a paddle, and isn’t bothered by the rain. We don’t know if he likes swimming yet as he’s not been to deep water.
Sleeps (at night): ✅ ✅ ✅ in a dog bed downstairs in the lounge with his foster buddies but we think he’d like to sleep in the human’s bedroom especially if he ends up being a solo dog as he’s very human focused too.
Walks on lead ✅ ✅ ✅ he picked up how to walk right by the end of his very first walk, very relaxed once she got the hang of it all, very smart boy, but his whippet nerviness can get to him sometimes, so a kind and consistent home is needed. He’s not offlead yet because of his nerves outside of an enclosed field (which he liked once he stopped being worried about it!)
Harness/collar ✅ ✅ ✅ again he was worried by them at first but is very good now
Affectionate? ✅✅ ✅YES YES YES, tummy rubs and cuddles in for fuss, would be a lap dog if he could, he’s desperate for someone to love. Leans on you and kisses you whenever he can reach!
Likes a bed? ✅✅ ✅
Likes a blanket? ✅✅ ✅
Car? ✅✅ ✅ You have to lift him in but he’s so good, super quiet
Toilet trained ✅ ✅ ✅ needs a definite set of instructions how to do it as he stresses about getting things wrong
Plays with toys ✅✅ ✅ needed a LOT of help at the foster’s with this as he’s so shy but is out of his shell now and will cooperate engage and play with toys with the other dogs and the humans
Been on holiday? ✅✅ ✅ yes and it took him a few days to work it out but loved it once he did
Grooming? ✅✅ ✅ He likes being brushed and will let you clip his claws if he trusts you and you are slow and gentle
Other animals ? ✅✅ He has seen squirrels, sheep 🐑, horses🐎,and ducks 🦆 etc out on walks and isn’t bothered at all
Treats? ✅✅ Yes, he likes a treat but it took a while for him to get confident enough to take them- he does now 🙂 so this could help with training but don’t rely on it as he will need to do commands without expecting a food reward ( and never leave a dog unsupervised with a bone)
Humans (male and female)? ✅✅ Yes but again needs time to know you’re safe to come and say hi to 👨👩
Good around food? ✅ yes, but prefers a quiet solo place to eat, with no dogs or humans watching, it’s quite common for whippets to be food shy. He’s not food reactive at all, other dogs could push him off his bowl without him retaliating because he’s submissive but we’d rather that did not happen in his forever home of course.
Being picked up? ✅ Not a great fan of it but tolerates it, his submissive nature lets you do these necessary things. Some goes for baths.
Recalls ✅ improving, he knows what to do but sometimes his nerves get to him and he gets confused
Knows sit and wait ✅ improving, see recalls
HMMMs (will likely take time)Friendly when he first meets you 🟨 once he gets to know you he’s a total sweetheart, so he needs slow and gentle intros to new things and people, like many dogs do, as she goes super still (he used to run away and hide so he’s LOADS better) sometimes when he’s stressed
Kids 🟨 yes if older/very used to dogs and let him come to them only when he’s ready- so older12+ / calmer children 8+ (the youngest we advise) resident who are very dog savvy and know to give a dog time to come over and engage rather than go over to him- he’s met visiting older kids and is super good and gentle with them 👪
NOPEs (and things he doesn’t do)Cats test: ❌no sorry, none resident, he is not in the slightest bit prey reactive on walks or in the garden but we don’t home dogs with cats unless both the dogs and the cats are provably ok with each other. 🐈 (same goes for squirrels.) Home visits to test how he is with cats COULD be possible with sensible precautions in place.
Chews? ❌ not now as soon as he was told what was ok to chew and what was not he stopped, chews toys instead
Separation anxiety ❌ he doesn’t make much noise at all, only a play woo or a dinner time ‘hurry up’! (Is left 3 hours max )
doesn’t like hats 🧢❌ the dog catchers and shelter workers wear these hats, and they are often NOT kind to the dogs, so a dislike of hats especially caps is sadly usual for a lot of dogs.
Type of home we'd like for himWhen he first came home, he settled quite quickly, but froze a lot because of his whippet nerviness- but make no mistake! ALL new dogs are stressed when they go somewhere new especially without their mum, so even if he seems ok, he like ALL dogs will need time to settle/decompress. Moby was quiet and careful in his foster home for about 3 months, but happy to copy other dogs for what to do in the house- and now even out of his shell he’s not brave 💙 so his quiet/shyness is just his character- but he’s SO loving too. Full live support will of course be provided by our team 🙂 but to keep any stress levels he has to a minimum, we are trying to find a place as similar to what he has now.
Right now he has free roam downstairs, and sleeps downstairs in the lounge with his foster buddies. We would like a similar forever home as possible to what he's used to for continuity. He has direct access to a secure garden, fenced between 6 and 8 feet but has never shown an indication to do a runner. He sleeps in a bed on the window seat or an armchair, he likes to be in the lounge with the other dogs, and sleeps well (in fact he’s a bit of a couch potato!) for chilling and processing! He has his own bowls and never shares them with other dogs at the same time (house rules!) though once they're empty all the doggies have a good lick with no issue. And the dogs are given lots of jobs and tasks with or without treats to reinforce cooperation and socialisation which would need to carry on in the forever home.
He lives in a suburban area, in an off-main but through road, with the sea and woods/parks close by (5 minute walk/drive), it's quite quiet but a fair amount of vehicles and pedestrians pass through 15-20 a day). Ny has quite a few dogs to play with, boys and girls, old and young, big and small but we'd like less dogs in the forever home so she can have more attention, she could probably cope with being one of up to 3 dogs, but no solo homes please-he's a follower and needs a confident and chilled doggy resident to show him the new house rules for toilet etc. Moby’s very up for play though so playful resident dogs would also work.
He needs the forever home to continue the reinforcing of reassurance he’s being a good boy, and socialisation with his whippet nature. The Foster does this with him all the time in the foster home to give him security and reassurance, he's super accepting of new dogs of all ages 🙂 🙂 He has no regular time/day of walking routine as yet but does like to go, so would likely fit in to the walks pattern in the forever home with minimal effort. The foster would work with you to acclimatise him to your walk routine as we find it’s easier to walk neutrally in foster then get them used to the forever home routine than teach them two different routines.
Moby needs a patient home that gets he’s a shy lad and takes time to get to know you, but super cuddly and steadfast once he knows you. Like most lurchers (in this case a whippet lurcher), they take their time to make up their minds, but once they love you, they love for life ❤
He would benefit from a dog of any nature age or size in the home if the dog would like a buddy to hang out with, play and walk with (resident dog can be mellow/happy/playful/bouncy etc) to show her the new house rules. He likes the dogs where she lives (sensible introductions to new dogs must be done), she loves to play, and now she knows walks, loves them too. Do you live by some cool woods and have a Moby shaped space in your home? So an in home buddy is preferred (and see below about our little Anna!) but we will consider solo dog homes if walked and socialised with other dogs and humans regularly under old and new Animal Welfare rules.
Full advice and updates provided by the rescue of course as she decompresses. Previous adopters especially welcome.
COSTS TO KEEP THEM at the foster's.
Each dog costs the rescue £650 minimum before they even reach the UK, but once they are here they need food equipment and regular vet care. We need £45 a month to cover this sponsorship and are happy to share this between up to 15 Aunties and Uncles paying £3 each per month💙
